Trespasser:
Off the Path
(back
to Introduction)
Level 8
This level has a fairly simple OOB that surrounds both the playing area
(which is nestled up against the mountain) and the mountain itself. I could
find only one survivable way down. After you climb the third set of metal
stairs, you can go left or right. Go left and kill the waiting raptor
(unless you are using the "dinos" cheat). Then you’re just about
there. The starting point is near 1463, -41, 544. Facing 0.7, -0.0, -0.7,
you should see an arm (a ridge, really) of the mountain below you. Save your
game. Do the luge (after stepping forward over the edge, hold down
"zx" and steer with the mouse. When you get to the
"arm," you have to go down either the left side or the right side.
You have to make it to the right side in order to survive. If you keep
missing that, move your starting point to the right. Once you go down the
right side of the "arm," you will shortly see a cleft below you.
Steer into that. You should be able to stop for a short respite and heal any
damage. Save your game. Then continue down to the bottom of the cleft. Luge
down the rest of the way from there. You should be somewhere near 1664, -86,
269. If you look up to the summit, you should see the underside of the
helicopter pad on the left. From here, you can circle the mountain. It’s
only moderately interesting down here. You can’t get back up, unless you
use the "tele" cheat.
[TSOrd - Warning! Using the TELE 0 cheat on this
level puts you inside a box situated at that point, and the Alpha raptor
& another raptor snap and snarl at you. I suggest TELE 20,20,1.4 as a
safer point to go to.]
The basement: Northwest of the summit, you can walk down onto the
basement at about 2049, -1022, 1.5. Turn east (-1, 0) and proceed until you
see the first clump of objects ahead. Move toward it. It’s roughly
northeast of the summit. You’ll see more to south. The object clumps are
generally located east of the summit, as they were in Level 7. Some objects
and their approximate locations:
Rocks: -80, 293, 1.4
Boxes: -152, -248, 1.4
Dumpsters: -149, -168, 1.4
Steel walkway parts: -198, -224, 1.4
Guns: 49, -102, 1.4
Three raptors: 28, -67, 1.4
Big Mama (Alpha) raptor and small raptor:
16, -5, 1.4
Octahedron: 160, -61, 1.4
A neat place: At the summit, you can get onto the ridge on the far
side of the fenced-in area (without using the "tele" cheat). From
the point where you enter the summit via the steel walkway, proceed along
the fence to your right to the other end of the fenced area. When you get to
the corner, note that the ground drops away. Save your game. Step on down.
You will drop quickly under the fence, because the slope is steep. You
quickly intersect a cleft or notch. You must very quickly get yourself
oriented upward in that cleft, holding down "w" to climb. You come
back up outside the fence. Enjoy the view on both sides. You can try luging
down the outside slope (I got killed every time I tried it) or down the
inside slope (it’s much easier to survive this than you would think).
The Alternate Ending: Someone (I don’t remember who) reported this
a while back in the THS forum. The THS site is now closed, so I couldn’t
go back and see who it was. More recently it’s been described at
Trespasser Secrets. Turn on the "bones" cheat. Near the elevator
that brings you up from the Level 7 area, lying over that area, is an
invisible L-shaped platform. The base of the "L" runs by the
elevator itself. You can jump from the elevator onto this part of the
platform. Or you can walk down to the base of the "stem" of the
"L." Walk out on this stem, away from the summit. There’s a
small gap in the platform about half-way out, so be sure to jump over this.
Continue on, and walk off the end. You’ll be transported to the middle of
the summit area. You’ll hear Hammond recite the poem
"Ozymandias," by the British poet Percy Bysshe Shelley
(1729-1822)." When Hammond finishes, the helicopter rescue scene plays.
You can find the text of "Ozymandias" [TSOrd -
below and on the Humor page]:
OZYMANDIAS - PERCY BYSSHE SHELLEY (1792-1822)
I met a traveller from an antique land
Who said: Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desert. Near them, on the sand,
Half sunk, a shattered visage lies, whose frown,
And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command,
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,
The hand that mocked them, and the heart that fed;
And on the pedestal these words appear:
"My name is Ozymandias, king of kings:
Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!"
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare
The lone and level sands stretch far away.
The poem comes from a time when western Europe was captivated by the
"discovery" of ancient artifacts in the Middle East, particularly
Egypt. Shelley’s wife Mary (1797-1851) wrote the novel
"Frankenstein" (the actual title is "Frankenstein or the
Modern Prometheus"), thus creating a major career opportunity for Boris
Karloff (1887-1969) about a century later. The Shelley's were close friends
of Lord Byron (1788-1824), probably the most famous of the
"Romantic" poets. These people were kind of like rock stars in
their day. Byron’s daughter Lady Ada (1815-1852) worked with Charles
Babbage (1791-1871), who was trying to develop a steam-powered mechanical
computing machine. The computer language ADA is named after her. She did
some of the very first theoretical research in computing science (including
a prototype computer program for calculating Bernoulli numbers). Her work
had to be theoretical, since there were no computers at the time, and for
quite some time thereafter. Which brings us to PCs and this game. I feel
like James Burke doing "Connections." Maybe "Ozymandias"
was a metaphor for this game, or at least the pre-release hype ("behold
my works - realistic physics in the game engine and incredible dinosaur
AI").
